For some adults, as well as teens and children, the phrase “I have a headache” doesn’t begin to describe the profound nature of migraine or cluster head pain. Yet in the US, a headache is the most common brain disorder. To raise awareness of this disorder, the 4th annual Miles for Migraine run will take place on Sunday, October 9 in Golden Gate Park. In 2010 the Miles for Migraine nonprofit was able to provide a $10,000 donation to the University of California Headache Center for research and clinical practice of headache. “The funds will be used for imaging research that gets to the crucial heart of the question- what is going on inside of the brain of migraine sufferers during an attack,” says Neurologist Peter Goadsby, MD, PhD, director of UCSF’s Headache Center and a world expert on this common and often debilitating ailment. “Migraine is a complex, often horrible and disabling problem. Building knowledge about the condition from research is a guarantee of better treatments in the future. The Miles for Migraine run demonstrates that people afflicted with migraine and their families and friends are willing to stand up, be counted and act to change the problem. It is an honor to see this fruits of that effort at close hand. “

About Miles for Migraine
Miles for Migraine, an annual 2-mile walk/5K/10K run, was created in 2008 by Eileen Jones to raise public awareness about the deficiency in headache research, raise urgently needed funds, and serve as a fun and worthwhile endeavor for both migraine patients, their friends and families. The race is certified for length and time so attracts serious runners as well as people interested in supporting the issue. “The Miles for Migraine board of directors and race committee are excited with the growth and level of interest that this race has achieved, says Eileen Jones. “I started this race to raise awareness about migraine, because I myself have had migraine for 22 years, the last seven with chronic daily pain. Over the years I have sought and received the best of treatments from migraine neurology specialists and alternative health practitioners to no avail. I have come to believe that the best hope for myself and other severe migraine patients lies with research into the prevention, causes, and treatment of headache disorders.”

1. American Heart Association’s Powerful Black Family Celebration 23 July, 11 AM – 4 PM @ USC
GLAMAA volunteers are needed

Objective:

To reach 500 – 1,000 African Americans in Los Angeles with a black family reunion event that will bring awareness and educate the black community about cardiovascular disease and stroke prevention within the Los Angeles community.

We will:

© EMPOWER the community with information on their individual health numbers through health screenings and providing resource information that will help them live a healthier life.

© ENGAGE the community in heart-healthy nutrition and physical fitness activities, such as celebrity kick ball game, fitness demos, games, line dancing, fraternity/sorority stepping.

© HONOR loved ones lost to heart disease and stroke with a family tree memorial (attach pictures and keepsakes); have a celebrity kick ball game; dedication of a walking path and/or award in honor of Lou Dantzler (Community Leader and Challengers Boy & Girls Club Founder, who died of stroke).
